D motor grader

Recently acquired a Ac motor grader serial# D 5018 can anyone tell me the year of this machine. It looks like someone has put a diesel motor in it , a D262 ser#4514288 other #s on the block are D-16053 D was wondering the year on this as well. When we try starting it the crank pulley moves about an inch we tried a few times but it stops in the same place. Something locked up inside. Any info on this machine would be helpful also reputable parts distributors. Thanks

Are you sure the diesel is not original? 1954-1958 a 230 diesel could be standard. 262 was 58-71. If originally a gas, your serial # looks to be 1956. If really a diesel, 1970.

Thanks for the reply yes it's a transplant the bolt holds on the bell housing don't match up and a adapter plate has been used. The frame has been extended to hold the radiator. Can you tell me is the model of this machine just a D grader or is there another classification I looked at the serial # list for Ac but didn't see a D

I have no experience with these. I am relying on Norm Swinford's AC construction book. It looks like the only difference was the diesel was "DD".
I'm surprised at the engine change. Those diesel engines were problematic, whereas the gas engines were not. A late model 226 gas engine will fit where an early 226 was, and has much improved lubrication, and more HP.

The adaptor plate doesn't necessarily mean that it has been re powered. The transaxle unit was made by Clark so every engine used on the D Graders and DD Gaders will have an adaptor plate. As stated earlier, if the serial number starts with a DD it is a diesel model and just a D indicates a gas model.

Thanks to all for the last replys we found the 262 Buda had a blown head gasket found one head bolt stripped we heli coiled it and installed all new head bolts they all torqued to 115 lbs hoping this will do the trick the head and deck looked pretty good time will tell ! I've put an oversize radiator in the grader, rebuilt water pump , still working out the plumbing and rebuilt starter wondering if this starter is for the original gas engine or diesel I saw the replays on the worn out steering box the steering box on this one is really worn out the steering wheel turns 3/4 turn before any movement a little worn ! Would it be possible to put a bigger hydraulic pump on the engine to run controls and power steering box efficiently ? Also looking for original fuel tank the one on the machine isnt close to original I've restored e few old semi trucks in the past but the little d grader has me hooked thanks
