7020 for a planter tractor

Looking for a betrer tractor for planting. I have an 8RN JD 7000 planter, with dry fert. My 1086 suck getting in and out of, is rough riding, and I want something different, but something cheaper. These seeem to be fairly reasonably priced. How do the ride? how are the hydraulics? Are the power shifts dependable? Any pros or cons about these tractors you can share with me? Is there a better model? I want a power shift.

That tractor is as solid as they come. Hydraulics are way ahead of anything else of the era. Closed center, lots of volume. They ride good, the 301 engine is bullet proof and one tough little engine. Powershift is pretty tough as well. There is some overlap of speeds, but still a great tranny. Only downside is the cab. Very quiet, but tight and has some big blind spots. Dad had a 7060 PS and a 7000. Both great machines for their time.

A 7020 isn't any newer than a 1086, running from 1977 to 1981. A 7020 will ride better, provided the 40 year old seat and seat suspension is in good condition and the rear tires are inflated correctly. The hydraulics are better than a 1086 unless it's a very late model 1086, and even then, are probably better. New control cables on the levers make effort easier---again a nearly 40 yr old tractor. The power shift is excellent for a planter application. A 7020 is 10 less HP than a 1086. A good condition and well cared for 7020 will satisfy your needs, but there are many that maybe aren't in that nice of condition.

The 7020 I had was a Power Director, but it was my planting tractor. Good solid tractor, and drove pretty straight on its own.
