6 Volt Napa IC7 Coil question

I'm replacing the 6-Volt coil on my WD45 12 volt system. The old coil had ceramic external resistor. Napa gave me an IC7 6-Volt replacement coil. It says on it, "No External Resistor" required. It's my understanding the IC7 is ok to use without external resistor if it's for a 6 volt system. I should install it and still use the external resistor because I have a 12-Volt system. Right? Thank you. Greg

As long as you are replacing the coil, why not take it back and exchange it for a "true" 12 Volt coil, IC14?

Buy a 12v internally resisted coil. Coil = NAPA = ECHLIN # IC64SB - from Duey Schutter's page on 12v conversion. Thats how I did mine and it worked perfectly.

I guess I didn't think it could be that easy. How come they stayed with a 6 Volt & External Resistor when they converted from 6-12?

Thanks Aaron.
How come they didn't put a 12 Volt coil in when they did the 6-12 volt conversion?
So i

If I use the coil you suggest, I would need an external resistor? Thanks again. Greg

Nope. Internal resisted means no need for an external one. I'm not an ignition guru, so I don't know why they put the resistor in in the first place.

The only reason I can think of why some one would use a 6V coil when they converted to 12V is they didn't want to buy a new coil.

I'm not sure. I need never start it in Winter. Mainly use it for Food Plots. I could send you a picture of how the 6 with resistor was wired if I had an email address.

Use a 12 volt coil with internal resistor if it's already a 12 volt system, otherwise you
have to use a ballast resistor to drop the voltage to 6 volts before the coil.

Ok. Thank you very Much. I will take back IC7 to NAPA and get a 12v internally resisted coil. Coil = NAPA = ECHLIN # IC64SB.

Just for your info there is no such thing as a coil that has a resister in it they are just wound in such a way to have increased resistance so that no ballast resister is needed.
