WC gear box

Our 1937 WC doesn't want to go into first gear.
Shift lever is very free and we can get all other gears.
There is the small rod running down the side of the main shift lever but it doesn't move - seems stuck in one position.
What does this small rod do?
Does it have anything to do with first gear?
If I unbolt the tower to check the forks and rails inside am I in for a big job to get this back together right?
I've taken apart smaller boxes and freed them up but nothing this size.

The small lever thing is a reverse interlock. That needed to be depressed to get into reverse. Can't imagine it'd be an issue with first gear.

If the shifter is in neutral you can just unbolt the top and lift it straight up. You probably don't have a starter on yours which makes it easier. I removed the starter on the two I've removed and replaced just to avoid fighting the tight clearance while you focus on getting the forks back in the right place. It's not a bad job to do. You can always post an update to let us know how you make out.

If you have to take the shifting mechanism apart be careful of the springs and ball detents and shifter rod interlock plungers. As you slide the rods out of the cover these parts will appear. Don't lose them and pay attention as to where they go. It isn't all that difficult, if you know these parts are in there and they don't surprise you and fall out before you know where they go.

Any chance it is stuck in gear? The WD's would do that occasionally. Try jacking one side up and spinning a tire. You'll know if the tranny is in gear. Worn end on the shifter can allow the shifter to slip out of gear while leaving the tranny in gear. Creates the problem you have.

And when you have it in neutral, it will roll or run and not move? Trying to make sure the shifter didn't pop out of it's rail and it's already in 1st gear.
