i am doing a full out of frame engine rebuild on a d-17 for a customer. another mechanic told me that the rod bolts need to be replaced . is this true? if so where should i get them from ? NAPA or an AGCO dealer? he said that after about 50 hours the rods come through the block...

No. Old rod bolts are fine. If this is your first D-17 gas engine OH, you'd better be made aware of the centering of the piston pin, or you'll be doing it again very soon.

I'm not sure what you mean. I've done one. I'm no
expert on d17 overhauls but I don't remember
anything like that. My engine came out of a combine.
Is it different or did I get lucky? It has enough hours
on it I'm sure it's fine but I would like to know for the
next one.

Make sure you follow the directions on getting the piston pins and rods in the right spot on the piston. The do NOT center in the piston. The factory and I&T manuals cover the technique for doing it right. Last engine I did came with paperwork on it as well. Do it wrong and the piston pins will carve a groove in your sleeve. If they'll even fit in.
