I know the finals are the same, but I don't think the transmissions will interchange...top shaft is probably different. I have one of each laying here, but they both have the torque tubes on them yet.

When you say the "back" of the transmission, are you referring to the lift arm housing, where the PTO shaft protrudes from?? If so, yes, that housing will interchange between a 170 and 180. The transmissions internally are completely different, as are the transmission housings. The final drives will interchange, but are not the same, as they are different ratios and gear widths for strength on the 180.
