Allis Chalmers Model B Oil Pressure

I have a 1939 AC Model B with zero oil pressure. I put a new low pressure gauge on it to check and got zero. Other than pulling the pan to access the pump what else can I do before I tear this little lady apart? Is there a way to prime the pump? I have a new Fram C159 oil filter on it. I am running straight 30 wt detergent oil.

Prime the oil pump. There is a tube coming vertically out of the oil pump by the oil filter. Disconnect the tube that goes to the oil filter and shoot oil from an oil can back down into the oil pump. Reassemble and try it out. Good luck.

Isn't there a check ball that keeps oil from draining back ? I was thinking about possibly putting a vacuum on that line and try sucking oil up through the pump. Any possibility of that working ?

Are you using the correct filter. It needs to be a cotton packed one not a modern automotive filter. You need backpressure from the filter to maintain pressure in the system. Search the forums for a good case study on the filters for the Allis engines.

I got two filter types from the forums. the first was a Fram C159 the second was a Baldwin T300M. I have the Fram C159 installed now.

Make sure that the tube is installed in the filter base. The filter fits over it. If it is not present you willhave no oil pressure.

The Fram may not be the right filter. I think the Baldwin one is still cotton packed. Also, there is a WIX filter that is correct too but you need to check it. Even with the right filter sometimes you have to stab the tube slightly off center to get "tight" material surrounding the tube. If the filter material is loose around the vertical tube, the oil comes back out around the tube instead of through the filter and you will have no/low oil pressure.

No check valve. The pump holds its prime much like you can keep liquid in a drinking straw by holding your finger over the end.

To prime this type of system I put a rubber gas line type hose over the filter stand pipe and fill it with oil with a pump oil can. I let it drain down for a few minutes and refill, Crank the engine over or start the engine until oil comes out of the hose. Shut the tractor down, remove the hose and screw the filter back on. Easier than taking the oil line off and you can see when the pump gets its prime.

One of my old B's will loose its prime over the winter most winters.

The Baldwin T300M and Hasting LF 405 oil filters are the same filter and made by the same company. NAPA (Wix) is a 7011 filter. I won't use a Fram.

I think you left out one number. I just checked on my A/C tractors and the Wix number is 57011. I have that filter on the D-17 the WD45 the C and the W Speed Patrol and I looked at them to be 100% sure

The oil pump is mounted on the back of the engine, driven by the cam, you can't get to it from the pan.

So then your saying the NAPA filter is 7011 and it is NOT a Wix filter then????????????

Probably made by the same people. As long as it has cotton batting in it and not paper, it's good to go. For a while the "right" filter number had paper in it and led to very low oil pressure.

So then like the O'Reilly's motor oil. O'Reilly's uses a black bottle and Valvoline a white one but either way it is the same oil just the O'Reilly's stuff is a buck cheaper

I read several years ago that O'Reilly's motor oil was packaged by Omni Specialty Shreveport, Louisiana.

Nope it is in fact Valvoline I have checked that to be sure by asking about it

The Fram filter is made by the Rank Group owned by Reynolds consumer products. The Baldwin is made by J.L. Clark Manufacturing Co.(Clarcor) and they also own Hastings filters. Their is a difference between manufactures and their filters. Some put just the bare minimum filtering media to past as an OEM filter and others will go beyond the OEM specs.

Make sure you have a filter with string inside, not paper C-159 Fram.
Make sure the stand tube is in the center of the filter base and sticks up about 4".
Prime the pump. LOL Bob

All of this advise on paper oil filters causing a problem and not one word on a quick check to see if it might be the filter.
With the filter off crank or start the engine to see if oil is coming out the stand pipe. If no oil it needs primed if you have oil you need a different filter. (oil gets into the filter thru the stand pipe)
It will make less of a mess it you place a hose over the stand pipe with the other end in a coffee can. :)^D
