D17 IV questions

I currently have a small tractor and would like to increase horsepower. There is an estate sale that has a 1 owner D17 bought new in '68. The ad states that it starts and runs, but I have not inspected for signs of any obvious problems.

I want to increase my primary tillage capability. Nothing huge. I am thinking 3 bottom plow, 7 or 8 foot disk, maybe a 5 or 7 shank chisel. Someday also a 5 foot rototiller.

Do you experts think this tractor matches up well with that type of work? It is a gas wide front if it matters.

I fully understand value is regional and affected by details like tire condition and many other factors. Assuming reasonable quality, would $1000 to $1500 be a bargain?

If you guys think it will do what I want, I will go have a look at it. Thanks in advance.

Ps: I tried to post this last night but it never showed up. If a double shows up, that is why.

If it is in fact a series 4 it could bring up to and around $3000. Should have a factory 3 point also at around 52HP

Well, I assume it is a factory 3 point. Here are a couple pics. Hope I post them correctly.

In my area one that looks like that could bring well over $3000 and the front weights are a plus

Well, if it stays in my price range, I might just buy it. I think I can sell my Case and the upgrade will be a washout. I can only hope at this point.

Ya that is one thing about an auction one never knows how much something may sell for. Seen things sell at auction for twice what they are worth and other times see thing go for penny's on the dollar like the manure spreader I got for $7

It helps to not be in a hurry. I am not in a hurry. If I could use this tractor for a year and swap for something 50+ hp with a FEL, I am then getting closer to what I want.

Ever hear about the guy who traded 1 red paperclip for a house? It is a great story.

As far as how much work you can do with a D17, as a rule of thumb you should be able to farm 160 acres with one. With the power director (big stick on right) you have high/low/ neutral and you can slip that thing all day long as it runs in oil.

If that tractor runs good and nothing big is wrong at the right sale that's a $3500 - $4000 tractor.

A series 4 D17 is like having a 170.

Well, on the financial side of things, I am limited in bidding to what I think I can sell my current tractor for, which is probably 1500 to 2000. So either I am going to get a really nice "deal" on a D17, or keep using my current tractor.

With careful buying and upgrading, maybe I can have a 65hp tractor with FEL in a few years for the price of my first tractor; $1500. A man can dream for free. Right?

Series IV will easily handle a 3 bottom plow, should take a 12 foot disk...but not even a 5 shank chisel plow. 3 point was optional on the Series IV, and that one looks factory. I would expect it to go triple the price you want to spend. A IV is a big step up from the earlier series, which still go for $2500 or more around here.

Thanks for that specific answer on power. Same auction has a 4 row bedder less than $100. And a 4 bottom plow at $50ish. Would love to get the package.

I have something in my favor. Homesteaders here are doctors who bought country houses. They buy new and are scared of "old junk". Farmers do not want 50hp tractors. They need 250+. I bought my current tractor for $1000 delivered and spent $500 to make it functional. I have a decent shot at this for less than $2000. Time will tell.

Seat looks worn out, miss matched tires are a minus. Factory 3 point, good hydraulics are a plus. It will pull a 13' tandem disk, 3 bottom plow, and a 5 foot roto tiller should be a piece of cake. I don't know what you consider a chisel plow, 5 shank pull type would be a load. Mine pulls a 1300 IHC field cultivator, 13' machine. The front weights have been listed on this website for 350 to 500.00 for the set. Good luck.

Hard to get a deal on a series IV as its one of those tractors a lot of people would like to have,if I were at that sale and it checked out half way decent it'd bring
$2500+ or I'd be bringing it home and glad to get it.It could easily go for $4000 if the gears are OK.There are some deals around I bought an Oliver 1550 diesel last year with a loader for $1500 and a running Oliver 1365 for $500 so you never know.

I hope you can get it bought for the $1000 $1500 you're hoping for, but I bet it goes for $4000+. You can probably get a series 1 in what you're wanting to spend or a good WD45.
