Slips out of gear

If a D-17 series IV slips out of 2nd gear going downhill, how tough of a fix is this? Top cover or split?

To remove the top shifting cover, the transmission MUST be put in second gear. Dowel bolts go in the left front and right rear corner. They are not known for jumping out of second gear so, could be a broken fork, shift cover installed wrong, detent spring broken, or someone has had it on a loader and ground the crap out of second and reverse gears. Only looking will verify the complaint. Gear and shifting collar replacement requires a complete teardown of the rear end. You just bought this tractor, right???
