If you go into Allis Chalmers history you will find that they built a lot of different equipment over the many years of their history.

Allis Chalmers always wanted to be an innovator. They had a no-til planter in the early 50's ,a fuel-cell tractor in the 60's,the fisrt turbo tractor in the d-19 and they were in many different industries. That had a lot to do with them going broke.John deere was much smarter and left others work out the bugs in stuff, like rotary combines.

The very visible orange farm machinery all over the country is really a small afterthought compared to all the heavy, not so visible, industrial/electrical equipment AC made.

Well said Oil Pull, but then they would build things to light in the final stages to save money. And another company that spent to much money on new toys was Minneapolis Moline, with that Uni System and all there goverment, expermental stuff, and then still have a tractor that you had to stand up on all day.

Think they built some monster steam engines also. Search "Allis Chalmers steam engines" for videos.

A-C also built the turbine generators for Hoover Dam

about 2/3 down the page under "Operation"

If you've never toured the dam, it's worth the trip
And not nearly as congested since they finished the roadway just south of it.

When I worked in an Allis Chalmers farm equipment shop we had an Allis Chalmers transformer welder. I have also seen Allis Chalmers transformers in sub stations.

I guess they had the first spin out wheel rims and only power spread front axle

Manure spreaders that unloaded from front.

Corm pickers with one gathering chain

Silage chopper drastically different than all others.

First rubber tire tractor

Best weight transfer system

A/C was a case study in one of my business classes in college at some point. Their electrical division got caught by the federal gov't doing something wrong in bidding gov/t contracts and they took them to court. I believe the result was A/C being forced to divest of some of those non-ag divisions. Early 60's if I remember correctly.

I worked on a giant kiln in the early '80s at a plant that made cement. The front page of the drawings said "confidential property of The Allis Chalmers Corp."

I removed an Allis motor from old piece of machinery at work and took it to be rebuilt, about to weeks later I was called in to HR! I was being question on the motor, seems someone thought it was my personal motor since I was a farmer.Had to take them along with my union rep and show it to them and all they could was hmm. I believe to was a DC motor even.

It just about got you fired. My brother had bought a new D-19 when they had there fly in, Buy a tractor get a trip Promotion in 1962, He came home pretty impressed.

why would that almost get you fired? Why did they question you taking a motor in to be rebuilt if it was theirs? I'm confused.
