Thinking of buying a 170

I have my eye on a 170 that has sat outside for many years, just left it where they parked it. Someone put a bucket over the muffler and thats about it. Assuming the tractor is complete, what would be a fair price to offer the nice old lady who owns it with out ripping her or myself off? Thanks!

Wow, a 170, the last of the W engine tractors which started with the WC. And I like their style
too. I don't know a fair price. If it isn't running and free that is different than stuck, but
still not running. How are the tires, a big expense if you need rears. This is just a wild guess as
I don't know the real condition of the tractor or what they usually go for but I think $1500 if it
isn't too bad looking.

It has to all be there first and foremost. Like all the three point hitch parts, tires, wheels, etc. The rubber gearshift boot better be in good condition or there will be gobs of water in the transmission which can ruin countershaft bearings. How many hrs are actually on it?? A veteran tech can look at things and tell if the engine has ever been overhauled or split at the bell housing for a foot clutch, brakes, etc. $1500 might be too much depending on things. What year it was built 1967 or 1975?? I don't get too interested on one that hasn't been shedded.

Tractors that have been sitting outside for a number of years are money pits. I would not pay more that the obvious parts you can sell. Plan on it being junk and be pleasantly surprised if it isn't. Scrap is worth zero right now.

Thanks again for your replies. All good feed back. This lady has a couple of useable implements I'm going to buy and I hadn't talked about the tractor with her. Your opinions affirmed what I already thought was the right way to approach it.

I worked with a fellow for years that bought a 170. The transmission was junk. Always coming out of gear.

The 170 is complete and I will be likely buy for scrap iron price. She just wants things cleaned up. So all things considered, I am not afraid to take it on. It's only a mile from my shop and looks like it could be rescued. It will be my first A-C. Also in the deal is a Farmall M with sickle mower and some other implements. I'm looking forward to the adventure!
