I600/D15 slow crank

Found the linked thread here, but wouldn't let me kick it to the top, too old I guess.

Anyway, I just got a I-600 backhoe which i'm told is based on the D15 Series II and it seems to crank real slow. Newer battery, and I just replaced cables and still same thing. Even jumping from my truck doesn't make it any better. I haven't yet removed and cleaned the hole up good to see if that helps, been cold out. Could I also just run a jumper cable from the body of the starter to a good ground to see if it makes a difference? Not sure if there is a defined a

Any suggestions for solenoid? One from Tractor Supply stripped too easy wasn't even tight yet, and 2 solenoids I had gotten from NAPA for my plow were DOA...

In doing some more research, I saw reference to disconnect the coil to see if that changes speed or not, and if it does, there may be a timing issue. I haven't tried that, will see what that brings.

Once I had poor ground between the starter and the mounting hole but it would not turn over at all. For the age of your machine it would really pay to remove the starter and take it apart for cleaning, lubricating and making sure the brushes have good contact...the solenoid has to be good. There could also be excessive friction in turning the engine over.

I bought a 615 backhoe tractor many years ago. It is a diesel. It was very difficult to start because it cranked too slowly. I found that the bolts on the underside which hold the front casting to the engine were broken which allowed the balancer pulley to rub on the casting. I put new bolts in and what a difference!

@Hlmillus - I'm not sure what you are referring to, might you be able to point me to a pic or diagram? I looked at front of engine and didn't see anything that looked loose.

Anyone have a suggestion as to what "normal" cranking RPM is? I melted my new solenoid from Tractor Supply - it was going back anyway because the stud stripped COMPLETE JUNK wasn't even wrenching on it hard.

I can see the starter body 'move' though the bolt that holds it to the engine is at least finger tight [I keep forgetting to bring a socket and extension out to the field where it is parked to make sure it is TIGHT]. I'm assuming that is NOT a good thing but perhaps its normal - so odd to see one bolt holding in a starter and perpendicular no less. I did hook up jumper cable from body of starter to bolt where negative cable of engine threads into block and didn't notice any difference. I'm waiting for a Cole Hersee solenoid to be shipped to me, i'm told they are good quality. I don't know anything about internal workings of starters etc, so think I should bring in the starter to a local rebuild shop and just get it done over so its not an issue.

This machine def needs some TLC based on the view of fluids, so want to get it running again to get things moving around and warmed up then can drain it all out.

Where is best source to get a rebuild kit for the carb (160 gas motor) and a replacement oval muffler? Right now carb leaks gas out the intake side and there is just a (maybe hollow?) small pipe with a flapper cap coming out of manifold so its a bit noisier than i think it can/should be.

If you melted a solenoid there is lots of current going through...there can be an internal short inside your starter. I had this on one of my Cats, it was 100% different once it was fixed. I would definitely have the starter looked at before trying a new solenoid.
I suggest you take the carb apart and clean it really good and you may not even need a carb kit but I think you can buy the kits right here from Yesterdays tractor. I bought a brand new carb from them once and it's really good.

Kinda what I was thinking, though the solenoid that came on the tractor was working I was just trying to "improve" things with a new one. But it still seemed slower than I'd expect regardless (i'm comparing to how a car normally sounds. if thats not normal for a tractor someone please tell me :)) and even had jumper cables to truck just to make sure it wasn't weak battery and didn't seem to change. I did pull the starter in the rain last night so I could drop it off to the rebuilder this AM. Had a sticker on it that didn't look too old, so I don't think its original but either way I'll be happy knowing it was done up good now.

I plan to do the carb while starter is making tractor inop anyway, then hopefully she'll purr like a kitten soon enough :)
