Allis Chalmers C wiring

I am still trying to rescue my 1942 Allis Chalmers C. I got to the point where I am putting on the wiring. I got the wiring harness from Steiner. The wiring diagram in the manual leaves a little to be desired for a slow learner like me, but I managed to find a better one that is color coded. If there better ones out there, I would like to know.

The problem now is the light switch. I got a three position light switch from Steiner (ACS139). It is quite a bit different from the old switch. I do not see how it fits into the electric box without touching a side and grounding out. What is the deal?

Second problem is I am not sure the wiring harness included wires for the lights. Does anyone have experience with Steiner wiring harness? Or, am I going to have to run a separate wire from the light switch to the lights?

Anything else I need to watch out for so I do not fry a generator, etc.

Thanks in advance

Larry

I think they are to wire lights also. What I would do is mark each wire with my own identifier, after looking at the schematic. That way you will understand, in your own words, what you've got and what goes where. After everything is hooked up double check what you have BEFORE you hook the battery up. That might save a very costly mistake. Remember if you let the smoke out it probably wont work

On mine the light switch grounds the field on the generator so it would have to be grounded Switch in is off. 1st notch is low beam & slow charge. Next is bright and high charge. Mine has no lights so I just use the switch to control charging.

well, the Steiner site says that's the right switch. The important wire is the "F" field wire from the generator that goes to the resistor on the switch and makes it charge full or 2 amps. One side of the resistor is grounded to the switch, and the switch case probably grounds to the elect box when you install the retainer nut... the other wires are just for the lights. You could check with a hand held continuity meter to see which one is the connected in each position.

Thanks, and I double checked, it does have a resistor. I must have to turn it just right to fit I the box without touching the sides. I might get a chance to work on it tomorrow night. Thanks
