Lowered Allis B

Back in the summer I was looking for a winter project. I was looking for a small tractor I could mow with. I have owned a farmall cub and was disappointed with the power and the offset position doesnt lend itself to confidence on side hill. I have always wanted an Allis B so I started looking for an IB. Never found one in this area or even a couple hours away. I did however find a later B with the adjustable wide front so I bought it. I had done quite a bit of research on B's and ran across a few posts on orchard B's which where dealer conversions so I thought that would be an interesting project. Information is almost none existant on converting one but the only thing I couldnt find pics of was the brake linkages. I posted on here and was rewarded with a few pics of an IB brake linkages which I will eventually copy and make some for this B.I have more pics of the process which I can post if anyone is interested. Im still not completely finished with the conversion but I do have it far enough along to drive around which is super fun. The brakes are super strong on this little guy,you can turn it with just the pedals easily. I made my own seat mount as the original needs to be reworked and it was a nightmare getting on and off already. I plan on cutting the steering shaft down some to give me a little more room. Heres a couple of before and after pics. Im eventually going to tear it all down and fix the leaks and put a new ring gear on the flywheel but like I said it is a work in progress.

This is a picture of the B I lowered. I wanted a mowing machine.
I lowered it to get under trees and to turn sharper. I also mounted a Woods 6' belly mower under it, and rebuilt a D14 engine and installed it so I would have plenty of power.
It works great. I can send more pics by email if you need some.

Nice job.
The cultivating jobs those tractors were made for are pretty much gone forever.
And they are way taller than needed for mowing which is otherwise a good use for their horsepower.
Mind if I ask some questions about your conversion?
The drop boxes on a B, do they bolt onto the outer end of the axle housing? So you could unbolt it and turn it upside down to get the drop?
Any problems with oil leakage or getting oil to the gears if they're they're upside down?
What did you do to lower the front?
If you have more pictures I would be glad to see them.

Yes the final drives bolt to the transaxle, so you can just unpolt and rotate it, I rotated them 90 degrees forward so the wheel base is 8" shorter and it is 8" lower, much the same as AC did to make the IB. The front axle is just a straight axle just like ab IB.

Thanks.
I grew up on a B but it's been a long time.
I didn't realize the final drives could be
rotated 90?.
I mostly just know the Fords.
Getting a tractor lower has several
advantages. Easier on and off, getting under
branches, etc and better stability.
Ford built some LCG tractors (Low Center of
Gravity) for that very purpose.
heres a photo of an LCG

Here is one I have lowered. Not a bad job. Rotate the final drives 90 degrees, install a straight front axle, and I installed WD45 fenders to look more like the IB. Difference is an IB has a shorter torque tube so these "modifications" are long enough to leave the battery box in place. I also like to cut 6 inches off the steering shaft to move the wheel forward for more seat clearance. I also put a belly mower on mine at a later date

Bluewater Massey, Any idea how they widened the one in the first picture? It looks wider than it would be with standard axles. Any pictures of the sulky? I like that too. Thanks for posting the pics!

C axles are 6 inches wider on each side so if you put C axles on a B tractor, it will be a foot wider....... they did that to get the double bench seat between the fenders/

I should say "final drive case" and not "axle".... you have to replace the entire left and right case with axles and internals etc.... to install the C on the B..... both tractors have the same transmission.

flambeauone,

If you need pic's of an IB I have one and I can take pic's of what you need if wanted. I'm planning on selling it this spring and will need to take photos then anyway.

Sounds like you're having fun...

Dave thanks, theyre pretty rare around
here. Front axle mount pucs would be
great. The standard B mounts are pretty
anemic. Maybe some seat pics if you
wouldnt mind. THANKS!

These are pics of the seat and front axle on one of the IBs I restored, this one does not have the frame around.

Was that a factory option to delete the
frame? I have never seen a picture of
one like that with the short
transmission tube.

All the IB's had the shorter torque tube, most, if not all had the frame witch was used for mounting various equipment.

Hey flambeauone,

Sorry but I don't know how to post photos. Please email me your email address and I will send them to you. I think my email address is open if not I will post my email address so you can send me an email that way. I hope that makes sense.
