D17 buyers checklist?

I'm going to look at a D17 this weekend and I don't want to miss anything important when I'm checking it out. Oddly enough it's fairly close by and an Allis of any sort is kind of rare here. It was a 3 hour drive to get my CA, This one is about 30 minutes away.

All I know right now is that it's a gas motor.

Good rear tires

Snap Coupler

Supposed to run and drive great.

So, What are the major things on a D17 I should remember to check?

Be sure to operate the engine at fairly high speed for 20 minutes or more and see if there is any blue smoke or smell of oil burning out the exhaust pipe. If it flunks that test, everything else makes no difference.

As with any tractor running well and not smoking a lot. Make sure it has no problems jumping out of any gear. The high/low/neutral will likely pull when in neutral in the lower gears but if the brakes are good you should be able to hold it in place

Rear rims and tires, are the rims rotted out around the valve stems? What are the tires like? even the fronts need to be looked over
carefully. If that tractor at some point had a loader on it the front wheel rime mounting holes could be wallowed out. Tires and rims are
expensive, now if they are poor and the tractor looks and runs good I'm not saying don't buy but price should be adjusted accordingly.

I appreciate everyone's advice. The D17 models are considerably different from my CA that all of your tips will come in handy. I'm hoping to go look at it today.

old mentioned the brakes should hold the tractor when the Power Director (hand clutch) is in neutral. Test the Hi and Lo by engaging each, in any gear, apply the brakes, and the tractor should still move. If it doesn"t, the discs in that portion of the clutch are worn and need to be replaced, $$$ and a split.

Yep should move with brake applied or should stall the engine. Say like in 4th gear on the high side that should if the brakes are good stall the engine

I went and looked at it and the seller was a bit optimistic in his description.

Third gear was gone. It wouldn't move without popping out of third unless you held the gear shift lever.

Rear rims were rotted out, Seller had an extra set that went with it.

Steady gas stream leaking at the carb.

Rough idle and didn't seem to have full power at any throttle setting. Due to the carb issue I suppose.

Manual steering was very hard to turn, Much worse than it should have been.

Seller claimed the motor had been overhauled about 40 hours ago, No receipts to back that up and engine performance sure didn't back it up either.

Fuel gauge seemed to work. No other gauges did.

I quit looking at that point and passed on the tractor. Too bad since a D17 has been on my want list for awhile. A good one will show up in my area sooner or later though.

You sure it didn't have power steer just low on fluid?? I know the D-17 I have is that way and if low is real hard to steer and if you did not know it had power steering you would not know it. Power steering on my D-17 the fluid is put in behind the grill which makes adding fluid the pits.

It's possible it had PS but the poor ol' thing had so many other things wrong with it that I didn't spend any time looking for it.

It hasn't been taken very good care of.

The D-17 I have came out of a fence row and it looks almost like it was in a fire. When I got it had what looked like a mouse nest in 3 of the 4 cylinders. Once I got it all cleared out the thing has run strong. I have used it to rake hay and bale hey and brush hog.
