Allis Chalmers C Air Cleaner

I continue to work on my 1942 Allis Chalmers C. Should I replace the air cleaner oil bath filter element? If so, how is that done without damaging the air cleaner? Or is a good rinsing sufficient? I don't what the element is made out of and whether it rusts or otherwise disintegrates over the years.

I see that Steiner sells the element, but not cheap.

Thanks in advance.

All I have seen are stainless steel mesh, usually a good washing in parts cleaner makes them good as new

If the filter media is rusted or falling apart replace it, available from Steiner Tractor parts. To replace it I drilled out the spot welds .

If it is only greasy or dirty, dunk it up and down in a bucket of kerosene and blow it out repeat as necessary.
