Barn Find = Farmall Guy Needs some advice

Got a call about this old tractor and equipment this lady has in her shed. She is selling the old homeplace and needs to get rid of it before the property is sold. I went up yesterday to take a look at all of it (2 1/2 hours away). Looks to be an old Allis Chalmers Model CA with some original equipment. From my little bit of research it has a "snap coupler" hitch and the tractor looks to be all original.

I'm a Farmall guy and know all about them. (I have around 75 Farmalls) I no nothing much about these tractors and want to know what it is potentially worth for parts and worth running and fixed up.......equipment also. I need to know if it's worth the 2 1/2 hour drive with a fork lift and 2 trucks to get it.

A CA is a nice tractor, it is the last of the B, C, CA series before they changed a lot and went
to the D-10, D-12 tractors. The only shaky thing is the hand clutch or axle clutch. They can
slip. This clutch allows you to stop the tractor when using PTO equipment to allow the equipment
to "catch up" or to tie a bale with the roto baler. New linings are available and there is info
on rebuilding the clutch if it needs it. Don't be scared of it, just aware. One thing about AC
tractors is you must keep the boot on the shift lever in good condition if the tractor is going
see any rain, water can get into the transmission through this boot if it is missing or cracked.
As some red tractors have outboard final drives one each side like the CA you know to
check/change the oil in them, some folks never do and it can be nasty. I have just done the axle
clutch in a ED-40, if you need to do this one I can talk you through it, [email protected]. Make
sure to put some Allis Chalmers in the heading or I may delete it with the rest of the junk on my
e mail.

That's a nice looking CA. Tom gave you some good info. Is the handle for the hand clutch still there? I don't see it in the pictures (but it's hard
to see on my phone). Someone may have already replaced that axel with a solid one from a b or c. That is a common repair for a slipping
hand clutch.

I would never let that go for scrap, and I wouldn't part it out either. That's a great line of machinery. But then I bought a C in similar condition, and there were only a couple of attachments with it. The problem is with how much I put into the C to get it right, I'll never get that much out of it, now that I don't use it and want to sell it.

Not sure as I don't even know where it'd be located. Those are the only pictures I took and didn't know to look for that. I also forgot to check the engine to see if it was stuck. Couldn't really walk up close with stuff in the way.

As with all these old tractors two things to look at are the condition of the rims and tires, are the tires loaded? the second thing in this
case is is the engine stuck? The CA is a real nice little tractor but as pictured not worth more than $500 maybe even less.

What I see is a C not a CA. A CA would have an area in front of the grill that was flat like the WC/WD/WD45 had

That's a "CA" with spin-out rear wheels, battery ignition, spring seat suspension, and a deck underneath the seat. The for sure thing is the transmission will have 4 speeds forward instead of 3.

The tractor looks good, I'd agree that it is worth $500 in non-running condition. The implements are what I think are worth the most. Tractors seem to be more available than good complete implements. Many times the tractors get sold but the implements are later sent off to the scrap yard after mom or dad dies. I'd say $1000 for the whole pile including the tractor would be a good deal for her and a good deal for you. At that price you're paying her about $200 per ton plus or minus. Scrap value is way down right now, in my area the price is 0 to $20 per ton depending on the yard you go to.

Definitely a Model CA. In the disc pic, is that a belly mount sickle mower in front of the disc? That"s worth some bux as well.

Definitely a CA with snap couple.
Great little tractor.
The attachments are worth more then the tractor. Especially the slat plow, they are fairly rare.
Go for it, you won't regret it as long as she doesn't want an arm and a leg for it. Bob

I do not know every thing about any thing and you saying something like this is out of place. EVERY one makes a mistake once in a while so please back off

Around here disc worth 500.00 , plow 500.00 sub
soldier 3-4 tractor all done up n painted maybe
1200.00 the implements are were the value is they r
hard to find and worth the trip

I guess things are worth more/less in different places but in my area $700-$900 would
be a good price for the CA and equipment.I bought a running CA, a stuck B and 7 pieces of equipment for $300 last year great bargain but old AC tractors just don't sell well in some
places.

(quoted from post at 22:11:18 12/29/15) 1000.00 for everything good luck hope she is not unreasonable

Most likely this stuff will be for sale as I have too many tractors now as it is, and since mine are Farmalls this A-C stuff would mean I would have to learn new knowledge. Thanks for the help and information. The lady just called me because she had to have it gone and knew I might be interested rather than it going to scrap.

I was just told that current scrap price right now for Tractors and Implements is $30/100 lbs by a local scrap yard. Maybe she won't be too unreasonable. She also has an IH Cub 185 LoBoy and a newer Massey Ferguson 2025 Tractor with Belly Mower & 3 Pt. Going to try and purchase it all.

That plow is newer than the CA era- slanted standards indicate one for a D series tractor. Bought one recently for $275. Our 3-16 slat mounted for the WD45 was new in 1956, had vertical standards. Early WD plow had curved standards.

Sorry Rich! I usually agree with you , but have a 52 CA, and from the front, the only difference in the CA over the B or C, is the attatchment holes below the grille.

Looking at the picture of the disc is that a mower in front of disc down front right? Looks like the handles on the one
I have. If so that adds to the value. Good looking tractor I bring it home.

Not sure what that was. I noticed it had a handle or two, but it looked alot smaller than the other implements so I just kept walking thinking it was a "part of" an implement and wasn't complete.

you dont say where it is - at least give us the state - someone might buy it off you - best, ed
