d17 governor question

I have a d17 motor that the governor has always been a headache. But got anither motor which is not running now, but i know its governor worked great. What would it take to simply swap it out with the good one. Thanks for any help.

Your "headache" governor probably just needs to be adjusted correctly and be sure there is no binding/dragging linkage. With the engine off, pull the hand throttle wide open. Remove the cotter pin from the governor link rod behind the generator. Slip the link rod out of the vertical arm. Chances are good, that the vertical governor arm will move rearwards when you disconnect the link rod. Bend the link rod shorter, so it will just slip back into the hole. This dimension is crucial to proper governor response. Also, spray a little lube on the pivot joints and the carb throttle shaft too. Make sure the cotter pin at the carb is cut short and bent around so it cannot catch on anything, hindering governor action. I've seen toooo many cotter pins that rub and catch because of poor installation.

Thank you for the information, I d id
adjust it the way you said and double
checked it several times, but the only way
I can get it to idle down right is to put a
spring on the rod going to carb. I can
adjust linkage where it will idle down, but
then it gas low rpm's. Any ideas wre really
appreciated..thank you again.

Dr. Allis, I have one more question i am
sure you would know. I am going to remove
the motor from an wc. I have read all
different things you have to do. Like
remove left rail, or remive steering rod
from ujoint, or just take bolt out of
steering rod hanger, which mine is almost
by the rail allready, or you have to remive
the front pully, or some say you dont have
to do anything, it is tight but it will
come out. Could you please tell me what is
the best way..thank you again.

So you dont do anything with that steering
rod hanger that is between the ujoint and
steering box. Thanks..

There is absolutely no reason to be hanging an extra spring on the linkage to idle it down !!!!! If the carb to governor arm is adjusted correctly, if it doesn't idle clear down, you must have a worn out/loose lever on the carbs throttle shaft. It happens occasionally, that the lever gets loose on the shaft making the governor lazy and doing other strange things. Better be looking at that throttle shaft on the carb before you do anything else!!!

Been a few years, but I don't think I did anything with it. It's only one bolt, so if it does get in the way just take it out. Horizontal steering shaft isn't an issue.
