CA Alternator

Recently purchased a CA Allis. It is difficult to tighten the belt because the Alternator doesn't have much room to move. Tried to tighten the belt but alternator is rubbing against the steering arm. Have also considered a new belt but there does not seem to be enough room to get the belt on. Is it possible that there is different sizes of alternators and a smaller should have been used?

Thanks,

the way you tighten the belt is to move the water pump pulley halves closer together. However after this many years it would most likely have to be removed and pressed apart and sanded before it would adjust. You just about need to remove the radiator to change belts.

If you can install a slightly bigger diameter pulley on the alternator you may fix the problem. What you would notice then is that you will need slightly higher idle for charging to work.
