Need Diagnosis for WD engine … tall head

Engine was smoking so badly I had to use spark plug extenders on each cylinder to prevent plugs from fouling. Oil ran down outside of engine from the block/intake manifold interface.

Ran compression test with engine cold. All cylinders have 140 psi compression. Removed head. No scratches on any cylinder walls. Walls clean. No ridge around top of any cylinder.

Had head rebuilt. New valve guides, valves, springs, valves ground.

Reinstalled head. Ran engine. Retorqued head bolts. It smokes as badly as before and oil still runs down side of block.

Looking for ideas on where to look next? Could it be a broken or stuck oil ring? Or ???????????

All comments appreciated …. RP

The upper rings hold compression, oil rings control oil.

It would certainly seem something is amiss with the oil rings.

Has that tractor sat for a long time?? If yes good chance the rings are sticking and if the oil rings are stuck yep it will smoke a lot. You may find that you may have to pull the pistons and go from there. Now if it has sat a long time you might try an ATF treatment and see if that helps.

RUN it and have it under a GOOD Load, with Rislone added to the crankcase..

Work it GOOD for a couple hours..

Ron..

Has the engine ever been badly overheated? The piston rings can lose their tension and oil consumption is sometimes the result.

Have owned tractor for 20+ years. It's never been seriously overheated since I've owned it. It sits from time to time (stored in pole barn)... gets used mostly in summer for brush hogging and in winter for dragging fallen trees to brush piles. I like the Rislone suggestion. Was thinking of removing spark plugs, positioning all pistons (if possible?) partially down into block (without removing head), and pouring some ATF into each cylinder, and letting it sit for a couple of weeks (longer?). Anyone done this? Thanks for all the replies thus far ... RP

If the smoking problem is due to sticking rings and or carbon build up a week with ATF in the cylinder should do the job if it is going to help at all

May sound stupid, but have you serviced the Air-Cleaner Cup lately..?

Mix a good Solvent with that ATF before you pour it into the cylinders..

Ron.

I have yet to mix any thing with ATF when using it in an engine unless it is a diesel engine then I mix it 50/50 with turpentine

My guess would be it is dusted from a soft or rotten carb to air cleaner hose. The ring grooves will be worn wide so the rings can move up and down in them. Dusting sometimes does not leave a ridge on the sleeves but cuts out the ring grooves.

I have never found it to be needed and I have been using ATF for a very long time
