Allis Chalmers C Timing Gear Assembly

I continue to work on the 1942 Allis Chalmers C. When I went to put the new seal assembly on the timing gear assembly, it would not fit.

However, it could be that remains of the old seal are still on the timing gear assembly. I am not sure. Before I try to press/pound it out and discover I am wrong, I thought I would check on this list. From the manual I have it says, "The front seal is furnished as an assembly and is pressed into timing gear cover until the projection on its out diameter contacts cover." I do not see a projection on the seal assembly I have. I am sure there are folks out there with more experience with this model of tractor than I have. So, I welcome ideas and thoughts. Thanks in advance

Before you put the new seal in the front cover where the seal goes in will be a flat piece of metal. The new seal going in will be wider than the cover and I try to center the seal with the same amount sticking up on the inside as the outside. Most gasket kits have two seals and one is to large for the C.

(quoted from post at 10:00:13 12/08/15) Thanks. There is another seal in the kit, and it is thinnner.

I took the timing assembly and two oil seals into local AGCO dealer. Fortunately only about 9 miles away. Near as they can figure there are three possibilities for an oil seal, and as luck would have I have two that do not work.

I hunted up the engine serial number, and it is R 333 G, which I think must be fairly early. The tractor serial number is 12887, which I think makes it a 1942. So I have another oil seal on order.

Thanks

I have bored out two covers in the past to use the larger OD seals. I had several in a drawer and didn't want to toss them out. When I am gone and someone else goes to change the front seal it will be a head scratcher for them.
