I am a newbie here and to Allis-Chalmers. I just bought a 1959 D -14 with s shawnee loader backhoe. I can pull start but i can't start it with the key all i get is a clicking sound. Battery is fully charged. Any suggestions? I am not a mechanic by trade but can reverse engineer anything if i know what the problem is.

Clean and check every connection from the battery posts to the starter. I've had them not start on dirty but very tight terminal connections. Make sure the solinoid is ok and the starter is grounded well. Might also want to make sure the starter isn't sticking on the ring gear.

If it only clicks that means the solenoid is not work as it should due to poor connections or it being bad or the starter it self being bad. Clean all connections and if that does not do it pull the starter off and take it to a auto parts tore and have it checked

thanks everyone for you help. Ok, so I swapped out the points, spark plugs and wires, took the starter in and the starter drive was broken so now the starter is rebuilt. I installed the starter and hooked up positive to positive and have ground directly to the tractor. The darn thing groaned and then started smoking from the starter.... I have the battery cables unhooked now. QUESTION: what in the name of hades am I doing wrong? Could I be on a 6 volt system? How would I know?

It shouldn't matter it you are using 6 volt or 12 volt. The starter can take both. A
lot of guys switch from 6 volt to 12 volt and use the same starter.
Take a light bulb out and check the volts as listed in the bulb. That would be a good
indication of the tractor voltage. Take the starter back to the rebuilder and have
him check it out. On a D14 you have a starter relay which connectes the starter to
the battery. The starter also doesn't care if you are running positive ground, as
used with a generator, or negative ground as used with an alternator. I don't see how
you could have connected it any differently. LOL Bob

Well I took starter in. It was locked. Have a new one now. Installed it and it turned over about four or five times then battery drained I thought. I took my booster pac and it turned over a few more times then the booster back literally blew up (wowzers). Any way I hooked up the electric battery charger/starter and now the starter just made a few high pitched whines and now just clicks. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE
