WD45 Question

Reading a bit about WD45's again and have a question.

Popping out of gear - was this just a 3rd gear problem or were other gears prone to popping out of gear? I assume this happens when going down a hill? We have hills and this is a concern.

Thanks!
Bill

That's why it is absolutely essential to have good brakes if you have hilly property. I've had my WD for 24 years and only found out 4 months ago that it would pop out of 3rd gear going down hill. Good thing I have excellent brakes but it caught me by surprise. My forested property has very steep hills. You imagine the gear coming out on a steep hill with a curve at the bottom and no brakes...impossible to jam in a lower gear when you're already going too fast.

WD's with the straight shifter never had that problem because the tractor had to be at a dead stop to shift gears, with the later curved shifter trans the tractor could be forced into
gear while it was moving and eventually it'd start to jump out of gear.If it was shifted
correctly it never had a problem.

Mine has the straight shifter and still jumps out of 3rd gear but only downhill any other time it never jumps out. Didn't find out 'til I bought the hilly property. The whole tractor is very tight and does not seem overly worn at all for its age..??

Wonder if the d14 used the same transmission, 3rd gear was used a lot, it would jump out of 3rd gear going down hill.

I moved to flat country and almost forgot about the problem.

Could be a issue if you have young folks driving and the brakes are not in top condition.

3rd gear was used most often farming back in the day on most brands of tractors. Very common to have trouble with 3rd. The teeth get worn and won't stay engaged.

Neighbor across the street has a Ford 801 with 3rd gear out.

Thanks everyone - very helpful comments.

I'm concerned about the hills we've got and the WD45 and my kids driving it.

But we also have a fair amount of flat property. Not ready to rule out the WD45 yet....

Thanks again,
Bill

My D-19 started jumping out of 3rd when going down hill. Just started doing that about 5 years ago. Probably don't put over 50 hours on it a year. But it is a pain now. Go up over a terrace and it pops out of 3rd gear.
