hello all, got my 50 wd running finally, now i find out reverse worked, but no forward gears. shift lever wont move trying to select 1 - 4. reverse ground initially but then went into reverse and i could zip around the yard backwards. what should i look for next? pull the two top covers and look at what is goinng on in there, torque tube cover and tranny cover and see what the heck is going on? what do you guys think? on the right track? tractor has been sitting for years awaiting me to have time to put it back together.

thanks very much.

I bought one that was the same way, been sitting in a shed for 20 years. Took the shift tower of and had to tap the rails loose with a hammer and brass drift as they were stuck and did the same with gears on the top shaft. Reverse is submerged in oil so it wasn't stuck. GOOD LUCK.

First thing I would check is to make sure it is not full of water. If you find water in it good chance the gears and all moving parts are rusted in place. I have an old 2N that you can not shift the gears due to rust all over the place in side the transmission. I would check to make sure it does not have a lot of water in it and maybe fill it up with ATF and let ti soak a week or so and see if things free up

thanks guys, i checked for the water, didn't see any, will pull top covers off and see what is down there, hope just need a little prodding to get them to move again! don't want to pull too hard on the shift lever, don't want to snap that off. thanks all see if i can get some oil in all over the top shafts and see if that helps them move again! i think my hand clutch is stuck also, didn't seem to want to stop ground movement when i through it forward, but again i will take covers off and look in there from the top and see what i see.
thanks again.

If the oil level is up where it should be in all places you might just fire it up and let it run for say an hour or so and that may help move oil around and warm things up and free things up. Had one tractor that I could only get in one or two gears and the others freed up after a few hours of using it in those gears

well, not as bad as i thought. got everything open tonight. did have water in
there. dang it. anyway, tranny had good thick coating of 80w on everything in
there. top cover was the problem. boot had a hole in it that i didn't notice and
must have been that way for a very long time. the lock ring and shield were just
junk and lotta rust on the lever. got it out and got the forks and rods moving
again. they were frozen, oil and working with them i have them moving now and they
move like they should. new shield and lock ring and boot and knob and we should
be good. i thought i might put hytran back in it, since it gets mighty cold up
here sometimes, if i have to blow snow, maybe the hytran will let me shift the pto
in gear a little sooner. 80w i could sit there for an hour trying to warm things
up so i could shift the pto in gear! thanks all.

It is Normal for the Hand Clutch to move the tractor when cold or just started up..

When warmed up, it releases completely..it is just the cold oil dragging the parts..!

I always leave my Hand Clutch Released, to take the compressed load off the clutch spring..

Here is a Serious suggestion...

Remember to NEVER shift the PTO into gear BEFORE putting the Transmission in gear and the tractor must NOT be moving..

This is to keep you from abusing that PTO Gear and Gearbox...

They don't take a lot of abuse..

FWIW..!!

good advice. thank you very much. got that pto box off last night. rear seal is junk but the rest of the box looks good. i wonder if i have the -45 pto box? how would i tell? i hear they are better (stronger) gears and all internals look good. shaft isn't too bad, kinda wollered out of shape, but not horribly bad. i wonder about the -45 pto box, because i have the -45 transmission clutch with the 3 plates in it, so someone must have upgraded some time ago. pto box is more red in color than orange also, that is what makes me wonder.
thanks very much, get some parts in the mail shortly and i will put it back together and try it again!
thanks all.

I just changed the gear oil in trans. and rear end of my wd45 and used 80-90 gear oil with Lucas oil stabilizer. If you use Hy-Trans oil I would use Lucas hydraulic booster oil with the Hy-Trans.
