7010 Shifter Update

Here is an update to a post I had earlier in the week. So my brother got the JD 3020 stuck on Saturday and I hop in the Allis to pull him out and the range gear shift is completely gone. We got it torn down and found a u-bolt that holds the shifter cable in place under the cab had come unbolted. We repaired that, but now we can only shift into high range, trying to shift into low or park seems very difficult and didn't want to force it. We can not even shift the linkage on top of the transmission by hand without any cables attached, so now we are thinking there may be a bigger problem with the transmission, is there anything we should be looking for? Also would it make a difference if tractor was running? When we were troubleshooting the tractor was off.
Thanks,
John

So, you've got the floor removed from the cab. Remove the lever bolted to the top of the shifter and find a piece of pipe 18 inches long to slide down on the shift lever and try to shift with the engine running and using the clutch/brake to shift. Not a sloppy fitting pipe, but one that fits tight. High and Low will be backwards and Park will be left and forward. See what you've got this way. Sometimes the linkage does wear inside and need replacing, but don't jump into that until you try it with a direct shift extension lever.

We were able to shift and operate the tractor with a piece of pipe, so the transmission seems to be fine. Got it to shift between low and high with cable but run out of travel before getting to park. All the adjustment is used up on the cable so it looks like it is time for a new one, any tricks to get it adjusted correctly when it shows up?
Thanks,
John
