Have a S2 with a fresh o'haul (eng and fuel system)and new tires but too much trouble to use it because it is hard to start Rebuilt starter (w newHD cables/New Batteries) is just too slow-instantly cranks when pulled but don't always have 2 people available. I am an experienced diesel mechanic and all my troubles are pointing to the starter speed-timing is perfect and no keyways have slipped so the mecahnicals are not the problem all has be checked and re-checked. so-ANYONE EVER BOUGHT ONE OF THESE HI-TORQUE STARTERS OFF EBAY OR OTHER PLACE to know how well they work??? There is a forklift starter (AC D262) on EBAY for <$100 but solenoid is on top and I'll need to re-route the air intake piping, want to know if it is worth that effort. Don't mind if it looks bad not a show tractor but a real worker .OR if anybody has a line on a similair version with the correct lower mounted solenoid. THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ALL-Jack

It might be the starter has a bad field coil, it will run ok on the bench, but won't crank an engine under load.

I've bought a couple of the gear reduction/high torque starters off ebay from rare
electric for my Oliver tractors and they worked better than the originals. They were only around $125 each.

hanks you for the advice-my starter guy -he took over for the former owner- claims he can make it spin faster but if the guy that trained him didn't catch the bad field coil in 3 previous attempts (had set this whole project aside for a few years-now I moved back and need the tractor) then I hesitate to spend another 150-200 on a bad starter. The younger guy thinks it might have had a smaller armature and that he can replace it with the larger arm. but again I don't want to throw more good money at the bad. APPRECIATE GREATLY YOUR HELP!!

Thanks for the help!!!! will look up rare and see if he can supply a match to the orig unit( solenoid underneath) so I don't have to re-engineer the intake piping. I GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!!!!THANKS A LOT!!!

It is also possible to install "high torque fields" in these old starters as well. I don't know the exact details, but I had a very reputable starter/alternator guy tell me this about 10 years ago.

thanks a lot!!this is REALLY good to know maybe that is what my starter guy was talking about, so I guess I'll let him have a crack at it unless I can find an Exact replacement Hi torque unit then I won't have to modify the intake I REALLY APRRECIATE YOUR HELP!!!!

(quoted from post at 19:37:01 10/04/15) Where are you located? Maybe some one can recommend another starter rebuilder for you.
hanks for the thought But I am aware of all my options within a reasonable driving distance otherwise freight costs are too high to ship it out and back. If I can't find an exact replacement unit on ebay for the $150 or less cost of similair units for the forklift (most of these guys offer free freight) I'll let my guy or the one other local one try the hi-torque field upgrade. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP

Just curious what you have for batteries? I have a series 1 that I overhauled. I use two 1000 CCA 12v batteries with a 00ga cable going to the starter. I'm running it neg ground. The pos cable I custom made by using one inline cable terminal so only one cable goes down to the starter. The ground straps are 02ga. It will start without any assistance down into the low 30's this way.
It's entirely possible you have a shorted field.

I believe the starter itself is my problem-I too have already been the battery and cable route-it is 2 or 3 sizes larger than OEM and locomotive was the only size bigger,-I can't remember how the number scale went if 2 was bigger than 0/2 etc.- with grp 31 1000cca batteries, [i worked at a MF dealership at the time and special ordered 2 sizes larger than what we normally stocked for our custom made cables] and I relocated the batteries in a box on the frame rail right at the starter so the cables were as short as possible. I have tried it both pos and neg ground. Still stuck with the generator because of the P/S pump. However, It was as heavier than what was OEM on the big McConnel-Mac 4wd's we sold, but still wouldn't spin any faster. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT AND HELP!!!!
