my battery on my ac170 keeps draining when sitting and not running each day. the other day I turned the key to turn off tractor and it kept running and would not turn off. it finally shut off after several trys. the next day the battery was dead. the battery was new in march 2014.

From what you describe, sounds like the starter switch is bad....especially if the tractor wouldn't shut off.
Best to get it figured out before some real damage may occur; like wiring going up in smoke.

are you refering to the switch that the key fits in or the push button that starts the tractor?

The keyed switch; there may be something broken inside,
which would explain both symptoms.

The push-button is just a momentary connection.
Even tho' it might be at fault for random starting problems,
it wouldn't be the cause of not being able to shut it off.

Check the keyed switch first.
It may require a new one.

Get the problem solved.

You're running the risk of a dead short and melted wiring harness or worse...a fire.

got a new key switch today and will be at farm tommorrow and put it on. thanks and i hope it fixes the problem!!!

put new key switch on thursday and tractor fired up fine. went back on fri. and tractor wont start. it wont even turn over??? any more ideas?

With the key off unhook one of the battery cables from the battery. If it sparks when you remove it, then something is pulling current from the battery. Put your CSI:Tractor hat on and figure out what is robbing your juice.

Is the battery completely discharged ?

If so, check to see if the voltage regulator is OK.

Have it checked, or replace it with a good one.

removed cable from battery and no spark. I can bypass selinoid with 2 screw drivers and it starts. otherwise when you turn key on and push button to start it, it does nothing!!! any other sujestions???

Do you have a volt/ohm meter? Test for continuity at the button. Sounds like your start button is bad.

Check your safety switch at the clutch also. I have one tractor it seems I have to push the clutch in twice in order to get the starter to engage.
