We are getting no pressure from the factory pump, it is the style that the distributor mounts to. We opened it up and it is basically shot through and through. Would mounting a car pump like you do for the old Char-Lynn setups work with the rest of the power steering system? (and getting a older style distributor mount)

I can't answer that, but I think so. Apparently the little belt driven pump used on the series III and IV is difficult if not impossible to find. I think the rest of the system remained the same between series. So maybe the automotive pump is the way to go.

If the D17 has live hydraulics, you should be able to add a priority valve, to your pressure line, and power your steering from that valve, and just abandon the old pump.
