Need a muffler for my WD -- what to do?

I had the AC 160 mower out and a walnut branch nailed my muffler and broke the seam just above the manifold (it's a Stanley replacement that isn't that old nor has it seen that much use).

Looking for a quick fix locally and then maybe I'll order a nice one (my other tractor has an old Nelson on it that is easily probably 30 years old.... the seam split and it is finally rusting through, but man, what a great muffler she has been).

Does the WD take a different muffler than a WD 45? Both of my tractors are the crooked shifter WDs (yes, they are WDs, at least as their decals show, and I know both of their former owners and know they are in an original configuration).

I ask because looking online, I see different part numbers for the WC thru 1953 WDs and then for 1953 WD 45s thru D-17s. But I've been burned before with my crooked shifter WDs sometimes having parts from one side of the line and not the other. Anything I can check or measure? Like the inner diameter of the manifold outlet throat, to see what replacement muffler I need? Or does anybody know the right parts offhand?

Ck the OD of the muffler pipe...

The ones from TSC sound Crappy but will work..

I am told NAPA carries the correct one but they are pricey...( Originally it was a "Nelson" and sounded just right)..

I don't know when they changed manifolds. Our 1950 WD has a very different manifold than the WD45. The WD manifold has a plate, held on with four capscrews. Then a bracket goes from the upper two caspscrews up around the body of the muffler. The WD45 manifold just has two holes for capscrews, one above the other, to hold the muffler. I believe the diameters are the same. There's the rub. Everyone wants to sell a "one size fits all".
Especially annoying is the bracket they want to sell that goes on a head bolt! I paid $90 for a muffler from Agco a few years back for my WD45. I told them if it was original style, I would buy it. And it was.

My wd45 has a bracket on the end of the muffler. The bracket connects to the manifold with two bolts.

The 40's WD the muffler has a pipe that slides inside the manifold. The pipe has a slot in it that lines up with a bolt in the
manifold. Don't know about the late WD's.

WD got the curved shifter in late 1952 at 126,xxx serial number. Same as the WD45 shifter and constant mesh transmission.

Do your engines have the bolt on plate on the right side of the engine?? If they do then it is the WC/WD engine. WC and WD use the same engines. If it does not have the bolt on side plate then the engine is a WD45. Learned years ago all a decal does is say what the own that had it at one time wanted it to say. Seen many WD tractor at shows all pretty and all with WD45 decals on them but not even close to being a WD45

My 45 is a diesel. I think the gas and diesel 45's used the same muffler. Dad bought the tractor in 74. it still has the same
nelson muffler on it.

Can you still get a nelson muffler?

You can but they run $130-$180. On the other AC page there is a part number that gets you one on the $130 end from Amazon

Well at least on these two tractors I have the manuals and stuff that came with them and knew the original owners (both were single owner tractors before they came into my possession) and they were definitely WDs. Never restored or engine swapped. I'm pretty sure they both have the bolt on plate you refer to on their right side (a bit hard to tell as it is covered with grease/oil).

Interestingly, one thing has me a bit confused, is the manifolds and how the mufflers are on them are so different. Like in this picture, the one on the right has the Nelson muffler. But that muffler seems to have a shroud that extends down past where the manifold outlet is (the muffler has like a skirt over it that is cut/countoured to come over the top of the manifold) and then there's that two bolt plate on the front. And then the other tractor has the manifold that has more of a "T" coming up from the carb, and it just has the muffler pressed in and there's no plate or anything there.

Tractor on the left has a WD manifold. Tractor on the right has a WD45 manifold. As I said, I don't know when they switched. It doesn't matter whether it's a WD, or WD45 engine, as the manifolds can interchange. I assume your later style manifold is a replacement. Replacement manifolds have been the later style for a very long time.

I HATE the Stanley mufflers, going to get automotive muffler and weld onto existing pipe from now on.

Im probably gonna get it for this but I have a 2 1/4
pipe tap. I cut threads in them put in some pipe
adapters and solidly mount mufflers on mine. Many
less problems and a cheap muffler will last that way.

Some of the last applications with this engine used a threaded manifold. And of course like replacements are available.

If you can thread an old, rotten manifold, without it breaking, my hat is off to you.

I'll just make sure to measure the outlets when I take them off to ensure I get the right pipe. Thanks for the help guys; it's been an interesting discussion!

I tell you, that old Nelson muffler tractor sounds a lot more powerful (also purrs like a kitten at idle) whereas the one on the left has more of a rattle to it with the Stanley muffler.

I think you'll also find that the different manifolds make a difference in sound. And certainly any internal engine differences(226 vs 201, power crater pistons, etc.) will make a difference in sound too.

The manifold on the Right is definitely a "Gasoline Only" Manifold..

The one on the left looks more like the original Early WD manifold and may have been intended for "Dual-Fuel" (Kerosene/Coal-oil/Tractor Fuel) use..
