wd strange engine internals

hello, took my 50 WD down to put orings on the sleeves. putting it back together right now, seems like someone must have been inside this engine in the past and few things were messed up. i have the I T shop manuel for it and it is pretty specific about how to orient the pistons, rods and pins, but mine was NOT that way when i pulled them. rod locking bolt is supposed to go AWAY from Cam, right and Alum piston T-slot Away from cam also with the markings on rod crank ends pointing toward cam, with the wrist pins on 1 / 3 dressed to the rear of piston and rod backed against back boss, opposite for 2/4 pin dressed to forward side of piston and rod to fwd boss, at least that is how i interpret the I & T manuel. can you guys tell me if this is correct? i put 50 ft lbs on the conn rod wrist pin bolts, is that too much or ok? i noticed pins must have come loose at some time in past or something as there are scores in two liners that match where the wrist pins would be, guess it must have been like that for years, pins were not touching cylinders when i pulled them this time, so someone must have made some noise long ago and partially corrected it. anyway, back to my question, with my components being assembled backwards like they were, will i have engine balance issues when i put it back together by the manuel? does that wrist pin bolt loosen up ever? is this a problem?

thanks for your help all.

i would put it back the way the manual shows. I doubt you will see any differences either way.

it is not uncommon to find the piston/rods in the wrong holes on 60+ year old tractors.

The reason pistons go in a certain way is they have a thrust side to them. As the fuel/air mixture ignites and pushes the piston down the rod goes down at an angle and causes the piston to cock other direction inside the sleeve. So the thrust side of the piston is designed to take this thrust exerted on it when this happens. There's tons (and I mean tons) of force exerted on the piston momentarily when the fuel mixture ignites.

thanks all. i will re assemble following the manuel. is 50 ft lbs ok on that lock bolt? that seemed to be what they broke loose at when i took them apart. don't want the wrist pin to slide around in there if the bolt isn't tight enough. surprised the manuel doesn't tell how tight to torque it. i have found some people that say 20 ft lbs, but that seems not real tight, not sure.
thanks all.

Quoted from page 16 of my A-C Repair Manual for the WD/WD-45;
"Torque piston pin clamp screw to 20 ft. lbs."

Dang it video didn't upload. Anyway. Got it running. But. Discovered clothes and tranny not working right. Shift lever would only go in reverse and that was a chalange. Wouldn't give me any forward gears. Felt frozen. So will pull two top covers and see what I can see next
