I just bought a real nice WD 45 Allis Chalmers. This is my first Allis Chalmers everything else I own is IH or JD. My question is I run Shell Rotella 15-40 in everything but this Chalmers has small external oil lines feeding different parts of engine would I be better off using 10w30 (Valvoline) in this engine. The tractor is going to be used to pull wagons around place and to shows and a few tractor pulls.

I use 15-40 in everything here except the light highway vehicles which call for 5-20. This includes three AC's- C, WD45, D15II. The WD45 is going to scare you with how little oil pressure it has. It needs all the help it can get. So I wouldn't go with any lighter oil.

Will the 15-40 oil push through those external oil lines in 20 degree weather or colder on start up?

I run 20W-50 in every thing I have here in Missouri summer and winter and never have any problems with any of my machines.

I imagine it would take a while for oil to start moving through those lines with a winter start, but that's not an issue, never has been with those engines. The challenge they have is getting enough oil at the crankshaft.

I replaced the oil pressure gauge on my old D14 once years ago, installed a 30 psi gauge.

The pressure hand layed low to the left, did not like the look.

So I replaced it with a 15 psi gauge, was much more satisfied as the hand stayed near to center + side of the gauge.

Be sure to use the proper top quality oil filter, no after market crap, if I remember they came with a wooden stick that had something to do with the oil pressure.???????

Don't throw that stick away until you are sure it's not needed.

I use Wix filters, haven't had a problem. Look identical to A-C filters. I haven't encountered any wooden objects with the filter either. The filters are pretty low tech, it isn't like you have to worry about the cardboard element coming unglued or faulty drainback valves.

Tractor has all new gauges and oil pressure runs up in top two thirds of gauge. I don't know what your talking about when you say stick. I am new to working on Allis Chalmers tractors For filters I have two auto supplies to buy from . One is Napa (Napa Gold) and the other sells Hastings and Baldwin filters.

The correct filter should have cotton thread in it for filter media. Often they will use a wod stick in the filter to keep the cotton from collapsing. There is a tube on the filter that the oil flows through to get through the filter. These engines only run 5-10 lbs of pressure when warm.

Thanks for the backup on the wooden stick included in the oil filter package.

I know I remember there being one included, now did my D14 need it, I do not remember
that, but one was included, if needed.

When I was a kid, dad run straight 20 weight in the WD. I still have it today and run 15-40 in it.

I changed the oil today. I picked up a Napa (gold) and a Hastings filter and they both looked alike and didn't look like cotton thread . The Allis Chalmers filter I removed didn't look like cotton thread and looked like the Napa and Hastings filters that are replacement for the AC filter. I take it that this tractor has a 7 quart system instead of 6 quarts because 6 quarts leave it a quart low.

I changed oil today and went with Shell Rotella 10w30 since I don.t think the tractor is going to see much work anymore.
