what carb is this

There should be a brass tag on that carb and on that tag will be the numbers you need. Another way you might narrow it down is which do you have the M/S or the zenith?? From what I can see in my books that is what is different in the 2 carbs one is the M/S and the other a zenith

Like Old says, both zenith and Marvel/Schebler carburetors were used on the D-17s. In my experience, most used the M/S carb.

The Zenith model # is 267 J8
The Marvel/Schebler models used were TSX-464, TSX-561, TSX-773 and TSX-871.
I believe the rebuild kits for all the M/S carbs are basically the same.
Some of the model TSX-871 carbs had the choke control arm on the opposite side from the others.

The numbers off the brass tags on the carbs (if still there) MAY help in ordering parts.

Hopefully the pix will make it. it looks like a J on the tag.

That is a Marvel Schebler carburetor. Rebuild kit will likely be same parts for all: gaskets, needle, seat, throttle flange gasket. If your throttle shaft is somewhat loose in the bore, you will want a new throttle seal seal. These do not come in your typical basic kit. You will need a complete kit to get everything. Should run around $75.00.

There is a tag but I can't read any numbers.

I thought MS carburetors had the numbers stamped on the
mounting flange just below the gasket?

I would remove it and clean all the paint off. I bet you
will find some numbers.
