My WD 45 has a bypass hose coming out of the top of the water pump but my WD does not have this hose. What is its purpose?

where does it go too
my 1955 45 doesn't have one but it does have a plug on it same as my 1953 WD
but my 1950 doesn't
my IT shop manual shows 3 pics of water pumps of which only the one with ball bearings used on lade WD's & WD45's has the plug in it but mention of what it's for

The bypass allows coolant to circulate back into the engine, prior to the thermostat opening, allowing for a more uniform warm up. At least that's what I've read. Can't prove it by me! I suppose it would eliminate hot spots? I never experienced any problem on the WD without the bypass.

I know on the E Gleaner, with the same basic engine, it made for a handy place to plumb in the heater.
