Need D-17 oil leak help

Howdy;

I own a D-17 Gas and have a rear main seal leaking, and blue devil stop leak doesn't seem to phase it. I do not have the rigging to first, pull the front end off, to then drop the pan and then replace the wick seal. Am using 10w30 Rotella Diesel motor oil.

So, any stop gap measures I can use to help me out on this one?
Thanks

Hello Old;

Can you tell me specifically what brand of 40 W oil to use, and should I run zinc or additives?
Then I'll know what to get at the farm store.

Thank You

Only oil I have even found in say a 40W or 50W or even a 60W was Valvoline racing oil

No options to replacing the seal that I know of. Another option on oil is 15-40. I have it here for my diesels, and use it in all the old, loose, gas engines. Even use it in the little air cooled engines. The only things I use lighter oil in are the car and pickup, which call for 5-20, 5-30.

There's more to it than just removing the oil pan. The engine has to be pulled, pressure plate, clutch, flywheel also have to be removed to gain access to the upper half of the rear main seal. You almost have to remove the crankshaft from the block to be able to remove the three bolts that retain the upper seal half. I'll bet the crankshaft will need to be re-ground undersized, which is part of the problem. Buy the cheapest 30 or 40 wt non-detergent you can find and pour it on thru until you can fix it right.

Some years ago there was, on this site, a method of replacing the rear seal using thin wire and a couple of curved plastic strips, without removing the engine. I printed it to save it for my file, but I don"t know the link.

Hello Old;

So the local auto store has Valvoline 50 W racing oil by the quart.
Will this run okay in this Allis 226 Gas engine I have?

Thank You

As long as the temp is above say 50 degrees it will be just fine. If you plan to run it in temps much colder you may need to go to 40W or 30W in the winter. I run 60W in my JD-B but it is a 1935 model so it uses a good bit of oil

Hi Old;

Thank You again for all of your good help. Like they say, knowledge is power .

God Bless

Don't know about the Knowledge but have been around the block a few times and all over the world so I have learned a lot of stuff and forgotten a whole lot more. I learned back when I was young to keep my eyes and ears open and my mouth shut and that is how I have learned things that maybe I should not even know. I have NEVER taken any shop classes to learn what I know I just learned by the road of hard knocks and I am always happy to help if and when I can
