'57 CA w/ possible Govenor problem?

Hi guys,
I have a 1957 Allis Chalmers CA. I have recently had problems with it running. I took the valve cover off and found a couple valves way out of adjustment. After a protracted search I found the proper gap to set the valves (.010) and still wouldn't start. I eventually got the timing right, apparently I had the plug wires in wrong. With this corrected the CA started right up. But now another problem pokes its ugly head up.
While brush hogging my field the CA ran great for a couple of hours, then it started running rough. It did this for a while and then started surging, the govenor causing the throttle go up and down. Then it quite running all together, when I try to start it, the CA will run for a second and then quite.
I would appreciate any help, I kind-of think that the govenor might be the cause and I would like to know for sure before I start taking the tractor apart...AGAIN! :(

Sounds to me like its starving for fuel. From my experience the tractor would still run with a governor issue just not well. Stalling a few seconds after starting is something else.

Fuel delivery problems are common. Governor problems are rare. Fuel can be contaminated/stopped up in the tank, at the sediment bowl neck, in the bowl/screen, and in the carb.

Well, I put the original carb back on the CA and it started right up. It ran for about 15 Minutes and quit again. After several attempts to start the CA it finally started after a few minutes and kept running for about 45 minutes and then just quit. I got it running again and slowly drove it up to the garage. I stopped in the field to remove the brush hog, when I restarted the tractor the throttle began surging violently up and down. It was almost popping wheelies. I throttled it down to an idle and got it in the garage. Any ideas what is wrong? Is it possibly the govenor? Let me know what you think, I'm open to anything.

(quoted from post at 07:20:42 07/25/15) Do you have good fuel flow through the line to the carb.? Have you tried leaving the fuel cap loose? Governor will not make it quit.

Yes the fuel flow to the carb is excellent. I had the tractor out Saturday and it started up fine and ran good for about10 minutes then started getting real rough and finally quit. I managed to get it started again after a few minutes and it ran good as long as I was going up hill. When I got to level ground I had to throttle down to idle because the throttle would jump up and down. It was like riding a bucking bronco. I got a couple of things to try and we'll see what happens. Still open for suggestions.

By your last two posts it still looks to be a fuel problem. Changeing the carberator got it to start again, the surgeing/bucking is most likely caused by lack of fuel and your governor is compensating by kicking in and out like it is supposed to. You say it runs good going up hill. How about down hill? If it runs great both up hill and down hill but not on level ground, you probably have something in your tank that is floating above the tank outlet plugging it on level ground and shifting off to the side on an incline.

ell it definitely was not a fuel problem. I've been out running it the last three days without a problem. It turns out that the little throttle linkage spring on the governor didn't have enough tension to work properly. So I bent in the hook on the end of the spring and it's been running good ever since. I also have a new spring on order.
