170 Allis Chalmers tractor ?

I am not familiar with this tractor. We are running a round baler and want the PTO to be constantly running. Does the 170 have a single stage clutch? It seems to stop both the forward movement and the PTO when you push down on the clutch unlike the two stage clutch which stops movement in the first stage and then the PTO in the second or is their a problem with this tractor ? Can the high/low be used to stop movement, leaving the PTO running and then shifted back to forward movement without pushing in the clutch, leaving the PTO constantly running or will that cause damage to the tractor ? Any and all advice welcome on how this tractor operates. Thanks.. Jo

There is a "neutral" built into the two-speed hand clutch for stopping the forward motion of the tractor while maintaining PTO shaft rotation. The neutral position is half-way between Low and High ranges. The hand clutch runs in oil for long life and abuse. You must depress the foot clutch to engage the PTO system and release the foot clutch to begin operation. The PTO live power system descended from the model WD and WD-45 tractor. A model One-Seventy gas tractor is a D-17 series 4 with newer sheet metal and hydrostatic power steering.....nothing more.....nothing less.

Thanks, that will make bailing with this tractor a whole lot easier. Thought it may work that way, but did not want to take a chance of grinding the gears..

Depending on the condition of the clutches, oil viscosity, and operating temperature, you will find that you may have to use the brakes to hold the tractor when the hand clutch is in neutral.

The great thing about the power director hand clutch is that when you get into heavy hay, you can go from hi to low without clutching, or even slip the hand clutch - kind of like an automatic transmission - and it will not hurt it. If you slug the baler, you can use the foot clutch and kill everything immediately....no fumbling for a pto lever. With enough experience using the Allis setup you will come to appreciate how it works.

Ditto, that. I bale in 3rd or 4th depending on windrow heaviness and stacker speed, and can 'shift' on the fly easily, or put it in neutral if needed.
