wd45 thermostat

does anyone know the correct direction when installing a new thermostat. Typically you insert the thermostat with the temp spring facing the engine. currently overheating tractor with hay down, in need of raking and rain approaching.

towards the engine right? That's what I have. I took the radiator off tonight and flushed everything. Didn't remove the thermostat because I don't have a replacement gasket. Checked the thermostat and it still had spring and wasn't locked closed when I tested. when sitting at idle it will pressurize the top and bottom hose and the bottom heats up fast which is telling me that the top thermostat isn't opening thus causing the engine to over heat. some people mentioned about removing there thermostat. Should I try that or maybe remove the middle out of my thermostat and reinstall?

yes towards block
thermostat can still have spring and not be closed and still be no good
only way to confrim its good is to place in a pot of water and heat it up using a thermometer and confirm it opens at around the correct temp
if not remove the centre or the whole thing for now
make a casket out of a ceral box or simalar or use silicon will get you going till you get a replacment at least
btw about 60% of new thermostats are garbage out of he box or at least thats mu batting average
so I test everyone before installing and then you get 10 mins or 10 yrs outta one
good luck

Unless your thermostat is 50 or 60 years old, it does not have a "temp spring", it has a wax pellet "motor" enclosed in a copper "bulb".

The copper colored bulb thingy is what needs to point towards the source of heat, the engine cylinder head.

just to let you all know the thermostat in my pot o water started to open at 185 but didn't really open until 195. Not sure why the tractor is running hot. I pulled the middle plunger and spring out of the thermostat and put it back in so there'd be some restriction. This should now flow like a wide open thermostat. If it over heats now then I know I have other issues. Rain is one county away, we'll see if I get hay made tomorrow. all depends on if it goes around us like it did when I wanted rain during planting. funny how that works.
