AC 5040 3 Point Hitch Issues...

Howdy!

We received a call on a AC 5040 - the owner was having trouble getting the 3 Point Hitch to work. He said the hydraulic fluid was aerated, or "foamy."

The owner said he emptied the fluid, added 4.5 gal. new trans/hydr fluid, and it wasn't registering on the level check, so he added more and it filled all the way up to the filling point.

What are we getting into here on this 5040? Aerated fluid, and 3 Point Hitch that doesn't move. It sounds like possible pump failure? Failed internal hydr. line?

Number 1 thing to do is pull the filter on the suction line, its metal and has tiny holes in it if there is any water in the system or gunked up stuff it'll stop the filter up and no oil can go thru. Also make sure you have a tight seal when you replace the cap thats held on by 2 bolts, you can use an O ring or go to a auto parts stores and match up a seal.On the 5040 the power steering pumps also pulls off the same line so make sure the suction line going into the PS pump is in good shape.Sounds like its pulling air instead of fluid somewhere in the suction line.

Hello - thanks for the reply. I suspected it was pulling air instead of fluid - thanks for the added input! I'll let you know what we find.

We replaced the filter on the suction side of the pump. It was NASTY dirty. It looks like there could be some water in the system. The seal on the cap has been replaced.

Still no power steering or 3 point hitch movement.

Ok - now we have a working 3 point hitch! Good news!

The hitch has some problems still.

1. With the engine running, raised to max lift height, the hitch oscillates up/down/up/down repeatedly.
2. With the engine stopped, and two test weights attached to the lift arms, the hitch slowly drops.

I'm inspecting the drain valve and pressure relief safety valve. I found broken o-ring bits in the drain valve, and am repairing now.

Stay tuned.
