How to change oil in axle housing on a WD

Have been changing all the fluids and Oils in my 1948 WD. I am stumped as to where the fill plug is for the axle housing. The operators manual says that 1 3/4 quarts of oil is the capacity that is required for the axle housings, however it does not indicate where the fill plug is. I see where the drain plug is however do not see where you fill them. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think the manual mentions the "axle housings".
Each of the pans under the final drive gears takes 1-3/4 qts
of gear oil.
The plugs on the side of these pans are the fill holes and the fluid level should be kept up to those holes.
There are no drain plugs.....The pans must be removed to drain them. The manual states they are to be drained and refilled twice a year.
Because it is a bit of a nuisance to remove the pans you can believe many may not have been changed very often, and....maybe never!!
Be prepared to scrape some ugly stuff out of them if you choose to change the fluid.
I definitely recommend doing so unless you know the tractor's history and are confident it has had the fluids changed regularly.

Brian, the plugs in the pans that you are talking about I know about them. I removed plug and there was a roller bearing in a cone cup along with a bolt with washer to keep the roller bearing in. Do you remove the bolt and bearing and fill from that? That looked like the only way to fill the pans. There are already pipe plugs in the bottom of the pans so that it can drain the old oil out.

If you already have drain plugs in the "BOTTOM" of the pans, a prior owner must have added them.
I have never seen them without the fill (check oil) plugs which are common pipe plugs. These plugs are on the inside of the pans about 1-1/2" or so below the mating surface of the pan and final drive housing.
It seems as though you are referring to the large (maybe 2-1/2"Dia.) caps on the housing itself for accessing the inner bearings.
I think you need to post a picture here.
Here is a picture of one of the pans off my D-17 which is essentially the same as the WD/WD-45.
If you look closely at the left inside of the pan, you will see the "boss" into which the pipe plug is screwed.

I'll see if I can take some pictures and post as to what I'm talking about. will have to wait until tomorrow before I can do that. I appreciate you taking the time and posting your photos. I also have a D-14 and know what you are talking about. Will post tomorrow.
