After following advise to figure out where the water in oil cane from figured out it was the O-rings. I talked to the tractor repair shop in town and they said $3500 to do a out frame major on it. Is that reasonable? Normally I do my own in frame majors on the red tractors. I have never messed with the orange or diesel for that matter. Thanks for the help all!!

If you do it yourself, pull the engine, make sure you really clean the lower block area where the liner 0 rings go. After I get that area clean, I take the block to the machine shop and have it thermal cleaned.

There is a good chance that the lower part of the block where the o-rings seat will have some pitting. If that price includes sleeving the block for this and is using a quality engine kit and redoing the head as well, I think that is a fair price. But make sure the sleeves and their bores are done correctly or you will be doing it all over again in short order.

They have been in business for quite a while. They have a pretty good reputation and they have experience with this model of tractor. They are local and always busy.

Yes they have a good clean shop. I have known them for many years and used them in the past to do a TA and Clutch on the 450.

This is timely, as my 190 (gas, non-XT) told me in no uncertain terms it's ready for a major, too (rod knock that came on quickly while baling this past weekend). It's been a smoker since I bought it a few years ago, and I've just been putting off the inevitable.

But, for $3,500+, I may start looking around for another 40-50hp loader tractor instead…

I talked with the shop in town today (Kubota/NH dealer) and without looking at the tractor, he said it would be at least $3,000 to major my 190… so that sounds in the same ballpark as your quote. He wasn't real interested in doing the work, though.

You can buy Farmall 400 and 450 for 3-5 grand depending on how pretty you want it. I am most doing the major because it was my grandfathers tractor and I want to use it for heavy tillage each spring.
