pto gear broken (top and bottom) wd 45 diesel

Hi. I've had this tractor for 14 years and have mowed all those years with a brush hog.(6 ft wide) The driveline hole of shaft is wallored out. on both the pto shaft and the drive shaft.(Hope I"m calling them the right terms) I bought a used pto gear box and shaft and installed them.
that gear box came off a wd45 gas tractor. In 30 minutes of mowing I hit a couple hard "clumps" and broke the driving gears of the pto assembly of the gear box and the gear in the tractor.
Now I have to replace both gears. Someone said you could take that gear up in the belly of the tractor out without taking the tractor apart (separate the tractor in two halves)
Please give my some sage advice on repairing this tractor!!

PTO off a gas is different from diesel
diesel uses bigger gear and housing
rear bearing carrier is different too, should say Diesel on it
You can replace upper gear without splitting
take off hyd pump and reach through the hole
not easy, but better than splitting

Those mowers are tough on any tractor, i pull a single wing , i have to let the blades come to a complete stop, or i can hear the gears clunking when i make a turn.

iesel[/b] pto box is AM 4200....I did find that the Ag. book says the pto box is different...
I look up into the belly of the tractor with the pto gear box off and it appears as one unbroken, seamless, hole less casting, and I can't see how if I take off the hydraulic assembly it will expose, or reveal any way to get that upper gear out of there (the intermediate sliding gear) Could you explain that a bit or call me (Randy)...I'll send you my telephone number

The shaft slides into the hyd compartment, you have to reach in there to push the shaft back in. there is a set screw to take out, then the shaft moves forward. replace the washers and shims in the right place. it takes 3-4 hands to get everything lined up. Still better than splitting.

The word "Diesel" is cast into the rear carrier bearing. It's longer than the gas one, it lowers the shaft, as the diesel gear is bigger by 4-5 teeth. The diesel motor runs faster. If you use a gas pto box on a diesel motor, the pto will run faster and the shaft won't line up straight with a "Diesel" rear carrier
