1939 B Allis Chalmers

I need some help on my restoration project. I can't find where a temperature gauge would be hooked into the system. One picture I have shows a gauge setting on top of the top hose connection casting. Mounted that way it would protrude through the hood. My casting does not have a hole in it and my hood hasn't any type of opening for that. I have a couple of other manuals and no mention of any type of water sensor is shown. I do have a fitting mounted in the block just under the carb that appears to be threaded with 1/8 NPT. Did a 39 not have a temperature gauge? Any help would be appreciated.

Like most B's today you have a mix of parts from different years. I bought three 1938 B's and only one did not have the temperature gage thru the hood with thermostat. I bought four 1939's and all had the temperature gage thru the hood. No B's or C's had a temperature gage mounted close to the driver from the factory. All were in the top of the thermostat housing. The housings are interchangeable and I changed the one 1938 to one with the thermostat and temperature threaded opening at the top. I swapped hoods so it had the needed hole.

I was wrong in my remembering. They all had the opening for the temperature gage in the housing at the top of the housing that connects to the radiator. All hoods would have had a hole for the temperature gage from the factory. The early 1938's did not have a housing for a thermostat. I have the old housing on a shelf in the shed above my one vise. I took a picture of it for someone a few years back but didn't find it right off. I'll get another picture soon. If you would like to install a temperature gage in the instrument box you can drill and tap the block into the water jacket. I would suggest to drill about two inches from the back of the block and about two inches below the exhaust manifold. That would make a neat looking idea. That is close to the location of the one in my Oliver 70. At least in that general area. I have not measured it. You would need to measure for yourself to make sure you cleared anything that might cause a problem.
