D-19 governor noise

I have recently bought a D-19 gas and found the governor was really noisy and sloppy and didn’t rev up well, so I put a new one on and it now surges and is still quite noisy. Anyone had these problems? I put a spring onto the carb throttle arm putting tension on and that works, though the throttle pulls hard now and doesn’t pull as far I don’t think and the governor sounds like there’s no oil or something, real growly. Engine oil is fine... Also the old gov looked fine, so it seems to be getting oil. Any thoughts on these? Thanks,
Eric

re the spring you added to control surging....typically used on other AC, but how did you hook it? Should be at right angle to the carb rod.

I hooked it from the throttle arm on the carb back to the aircleaner pipe mount. I'ld like to delete that, Im hoping it's just an adjustment on the governor

The length of the link rod between the governor cross arm and the carburetor throttle shaft is adjustable. This length can be kind of finicky and cause the governor control to not be what we like. So, you can try and SHORTEN the link rod a couple turns first and see how you like it. Last resort is a "surge" screw located directly behind the ignition coil on the governor housing. Turn in this adjustable bolt/screw 1/4 turn at a time to fine tune the governor hunting issue. Before anything else, remove that extra spring you have added on !!! As far as the noise??? must be timing gears, but are you sure it isn't a normal kind of noise for that engine??? There also is a fuel pump that might be making some noise ???

Wow! Thankyou! That'll really help! I’ve never heard a D-19 before, at first I thought the engine was bad, my mechanic too, but when we slowed it down it's not the engine. The sound is hard to pinpoint but I think it's from the governor, its a loud growl knock slightly disconcerting noise. I wish I could record it for here somehow. I wondered if the gov isn’t getting oil maybe somehow. Anyway, Thanks
Eric
