Yes. Done all the time if you have lifting equipment capable of doing so. Going together you have to have things chained so the axle is really square to the rearend or you'll damage the oil seal on the right side.
 
I was thinking it was possible. I put a 10" deep ,4" flange I beam over her yesterday
with 1 ton chain fall on a trolley so I think I'm good there. Another question I have is
at what point does the brake assembly become accessible ?

When you pull the axle/final drive out, the brake is right there.
