D-17 Front Crank Seal

I need to replace the front crank shaft seal on my D-17 III gas engine. I also want to replace my P/S hoses also. Should I block up and remove the wide front end, grill and radiator to make the job easier? I was thinking if that was the way to go I would drop the pan at that time and check bearings and refresh the pan gasket.Hard to decide to do this before or after baling in about a month. Main concern is the seal.

Dunno about the wide front, but grille and radiator for sure to do a good job. Need to carefully center the front cover on the crankshaft when re-installing, before snugging up the bolts.

Good to know. I didn't know the front cover had to be removed. Does the seal install from the inside of the cover.

No. Install it in the front of the cover while on your workbench. If there"s room in the casting, use two seals. Carefully center on the crankshaft, without compressing any part of the lip of the seal. Helps to have a helper to snug up the first bolts.

Front seal on a gas engine can be dug out without removing the timing cover. Wrap some good electrical tape like a barber pole starting at the timing cover and going to the crankshaft end overlapping minimally. Oil this tape and slide the new seal over it. Failure to do this may cut the new seal rubber when it slides over the two holes drilled in the crank snout. Use a properly sized piece of pipe to drive in the new seal.
