190 xt question on hard starting

i hooked up my batteries up 24 volt by accident on my 190 and it started instantly, it has always been hard to start along with all the other ones. The fast turning start it real fast, the starter don't have time to get hot, so my question is, is there a way to hook it up that way and still have 12 volts for lights and ignition switch. If so this would cure my hard starting problem. Thanks for any info.

Yes there is a way to do it but I can not explain how to do so. Many of the bigger machines use 24 volts starting but a 12 volt light and charging system

Early JD 3020/4020, etc. had 24 volt start, 12 volt lights, etc. 12 volt batteries are wired in series for starting, 12 volt loads are split, about half to each battery. Can be hard to balance the loads. I converted both of mine to simple 12 systems with JD kit. Better to fix the starting issues.

every thing has been done that we know to do, those 190s from what i have read are pretty much not going to start if it is 30 to 40 degrees. Injector pump, injectors, complete engine rebuild, still hard to start if cool at all, i like the tractor if you did'nt have to have a good set of jumper cables and a truck to jump it with, and crank a while.

I still have 3 JD tractors...it"s under 40 degrees now, the 20 and 50 series will start right now, the 4240 has to be plugged in, or ethered. Nature of the beast. 4430 was easier to start.

If you don't want to install an ether injector, maybe the answer is a different starter?
I have owned three of the four cylinder version of that engine. They were all low compression, and needed a whiff of ether to start on anything but a hot day.

have you checked pump timing and supply of fuel to the pump? Starter may be dragging or have bad connections? our 180 has always been a good starter even cold might have to give it a snort if real cold.

The 190 we had would start down to zero most of the time. You sure everything is in good working order?

thanks for all the replies, the starter has not been worked on so that could be the problem, i think i will have it checked, maybe not enough cranking rpm
