Removing a WD shifter knob

Can anyone tell me the best way to remove a shift knob from a straight WD shifter without damaging the knob or damaging anything in the transmission (shift forks, etc)? I need to replace the rotted out rubber boot...knob is stuck on there but good.

bear in mind that I am a KY redneck:

be in no hurry, it may take a day or two, maybe more,

I would wrap a number of wraps of electrical tape around the shifter stick, then attach one or two vise grip locking wrenches to the stick

the knob, I would use a belt wrench on it. like a chain wrench only it has a belt, the belt should not damage the knob. you might be able to wrap enough tape around the knob to protect it using pliers, but who knows on that.

if I remember correctly, the threaded part of the know is metal, so heating the knob would only melt the knob.

also, do not get in a big hurry, spray the knob threads with a quality penetrating oil for a few days, not wd40, but like knol brand which is a top line material.

if all else fails, you may have to destroy the knob, but do not destroy or turn the gear shift lever, you can always buy another knob.

WD knobs aren't threaded as well as I can remember, the shifter has a metal knob on the end and the rubber knob 'pops' over it.Take a very small screwdriver and slide it around inside the rubber knob to break it loose and then gently pry it up.If its really dry rotted it'll break anyway.

WD shifter was knurled at the top, shift knob molded to it. WD45 shifter had a metal knob at the top, rubber slid over it. WD- take the shifter out and slide the boot up from the bottom.

Thanks everyone for these suggestions.
I really like the "take shifter out" idea - would never have thought of that!

JMS, I just re-read your post - thanks a million, I never suspected the knob would be directly molded onto the shifter. I'm extra glad now that I didn't make a serious effort of unscrewing it!!
