185 transmission

Hello folks . Posted on here last fall about a 185 I bought with some issues which turned into bigger ones. Previous owner said transmission was rebuilt but first gear was somehow damaged during reinstall. Well first gear was never touched , it's in rough shape . 2,3 and 4 are new . It was also pushing oil from the torque tube into the transmission. I solved that by tying both reservoirs together with pipe thinking I could use it without first gear for now. Now it developed a loud knock in the rear of the transmission. Is there any way to diagnose without splitting ? Any thoughts as to why you would go 3 gears in and not replace all ? Any suggestions , opinions appreciated. I do have complete set of manuals. Thanks.

Might try pulling the shifter top and have a look at things, drain the oil and see if any metal parts fall out, also stick a magnet down to the bottom and see if it picks up any parts.

If it has the special low gear in the trans, its very expensive.Sounds like just enough was done to get it sold unfortunately you're the buyer. You can drop a pile of $$$ in those transmissions.

Shift the transmission into 2nd gear (3-4) and remove all the shift cover bolts. Pay attention to the front left and rear right bolts as they are dowel bolts and MUST be reinstalled back in those two spots. You can now remove the shift cover and visually see what may be going on inside the transmission. You might need a mirror to see the bottom shaft and gears. It's doubtful you can repair anything without a teardown. This requires pulling both axles and splitting it. I suppose they could have removed the top shaft and never removed the bottom countershaft. Why ?? I have no idea other than they obviously didn't know what they were doing. It's clear it had two problems when they got done.....oil transfer and now gear knocking noise.

Thanks for the input. I have had the top cover off. Couldn't find anything other than the
3 new gears and collars. On the plus side it runs perfect , director works good , New
rubber all around and came with full set of manuals. I give 4k for it so I guess she's
getting split.

my d17 series 4 had a similar noise, was a bad bearing. sounded like someone was hammering on the side of the tranny with a ballpeen hammer.

With the shift cover removed, reach around the top shaft and grab ahold of the bottom shaft and see if you can lift it up and down. Maybe they forgot to put the lower rear bearing cup snap ring back in place.
