What would I have to do to change my wd from 6v positive ground to 12 v negative ground? From what I under stand from other forums Ill obviously need an alternator 12v battery new 12v coil and switch the wires around on the ammeter.... is that correct or what am I missing?? Thanks! Travis

You are on track.
Be sure new coil is "12 Volt NO external resistor required". (NAPA IC14SB or equivalent.) With negative ground the negative post of coil goes to distributor.

I prefer 3 wire over 1 wire alternator. #2 pin can loop down to output. #1 pin through diode, idiot light, or accessory terminal on switch. Isolation is to prevent run on when you turn off switch.

If you have lights change bulbs or seal beams to 12 volt

If it has original wiring harness, consider doing a wiring update. I like to run 10 gauge wire from alternator output to ammeter and from ammeter to hot battery connection at starter switch or solenoid

As Virgal says. An alternator form say a 1980 Chev pick up no power any thing no AC works the best. Internal VR and wired as he says. Cost around $45 at O'Reilly's and has a life time warranty on it

I agree the coils that need no external resistor will have 3.4- 3.6 or somewhere around there resistance. It is a cleaner and easier install. If I remember right the coils equivalent was cheaper @ Auto zone I also went with the 3 wire alternator.

You can use your 6 volt amp gauge, you will just need to reverse the wiring on the amp gauge posts. If not it will show as discharging.

Do I need to change the starter to a 12V starter or can I use the 6 volt starter?
