Well that was not fun

So I was disking up a food plot area today and all at once no steering on the D-17. Stopped it and got to looking and one of the roll pins in the forward u-joint had came out. Found a short 3/8 bolt and nut and that fixed it. Sure was glad I was not rolling in road gear when that happened

Now that you mention it, my buddy told me I need to keep an eye on that pin on my WD. Need to go take a look at that, it's been awhile.

Yep not a good thing to all at once be able to spin the steering wheel as fast as you can and have it do nothing but spin in your hand and the tractor out of control

one way to prevent the roll pin from falling out of the u joint is too put a wire thru it and twist it to stop pin from falling out.

As long as there is clearance room: Why not double nut that bolt repair? Also could even cross drill the threaded portion past the double nut and utilize a cotter pin for additional margin of safety.

One of the first things I did when I got my farmall m was replace the makeshift bolts in the steering shaft couplers for the add on Behlen power steering generator. I double nutted them all for an added margin of safety. They have stayed tight and not worked loose due to this.

Whoever owned the tractor before me placed whatever thay had lying around in there. Slop was everywhere as most of the bolts were the wrong size and grade. 17 mph on a trike on the road and loosing steering did not sound like my idea of a good time at all.

No room for a longer bolt or double hut it would hit the engine if I did that

(quoted from post at 04:49:37 04/11/15) It's supposed to be a solid pin, not a roll pin.
I think it is a "grooved pin" which has good holding power and should be stronger than a roll pin.

I also put a bolt in my wc when i removed the shaft to change the engine . but forgot to tackweld the nut -- better do that now before heading down the road .

On a WC I used a double roll pin...smaller roll pin inside a larger one. On another one a little dab of red locktite on a roll pin also has worked well. Kip

That A-B farmall you have can do the same thing only it's on a keyed shaft. When I was getting on the B coming up over the back of the seat I grabbed the steering wheel to pull myself up and I pulled the U joint off the shaft in front. I don't know how long the bolt or pin or whatever is supposed to be in there was gone but at laest it happened while it was sitting still.
